WWE 13 Pre Launch Event !
How much Attitude has WWE 13 got !
Recently we at XCLANN attended the Pre Launch Event for WWE 13 in London, giving us the chance to get hands on with the game and chat to THQ and the developer Yuke’s. WWE 13 has the biggest roster ever to be included in a WWE title, and as well as the new Attitude Era mode there is the return of some old favourites. So straight away I headed for the Attitude Era. The Attitude Era mode begins with the story of Degeneration-X and their rise to prominence in late 1997 and 1998. Supported by videos chronicling the events of the time, the first chapter introduces the partnership between Shawn Michaels and Triple-H, before they formed one of the most popular factions of all time. Players start with a match against the Undertaker, before facing off against the likes of British Bulldog, Bret Hart and Cactus Jack.
Veteran fans will be pleasantly surprised by the historical accuracies of the mode – barring the omission of Chyna, of course.
The match against British Bulldog, for example, takes place in England at the One Night Stand event, representing the first time the Brit
lost in the UK. A hardcore match involving Triple-H and Cactus Jack meanwhile, remains one of the most famous bouts in Monday Night Raw history. Then there’s the infamous Montreal screwjob, which saw Vince McMahon go off the script in a contest between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart – an act widely considered the most controversial moment in WWE history. With interview segments breaking up the action, bonus matches featuring other WWE superstars, and a ratings timeline showing how WWE eventually beat WCW in the Monday night TV wars, Attitude Era mode is likely to stir up fond memories in older fans. And from the very first match you will be in for one hell of a bruiser, as you will need all your skills to compete in every match.

WWE 13 is jam packed full of game modes and match types, so many in fact that we didn’t even get to experience them all on the day. We did however try out the Diva’s section, as Samia being a woman went straight for them. Playing as Eve Torres all I could hear was “look at this move, oh you have to see this move”. Every time I looked around she had Eve standing over a wrestler booty popping her finishing move, which I have to say was just a brilliant sight. But then turning back to my own match I find that I was being struck with a chair or thrown out of the ring, (thanks for that Samia). We then got to play some of the other modes such as Singles, Special Referee, Extreme Rules or Hell in a Cell match, of which I dived straight into the returning Special Guest Referee match.
The game’s create-an-arena mode has a number of new additions, including the ability to change crowd size, side walls, stages, audience attire, and more. You can choose from a number of templates from old WWE programs and PPV events. With the developer having put a lot more into the visual side of WWE 13, as well as the totally immersive audio, WWE 13 is the most authentic wrestling game ever to be produced. It has so much content added and updated, it surprises us how they have managed to get it all in.
So after many hours of game-play we finally sat down to have a conversation with the developers. I have to mention here that both THQ and Yuke’s gave their full attention to everyone who attended. We wanted to find out a number of things like how they manage to fit so much into a game without it suffering in the visual department, or any other department. Firstly they have some people that travel around the world with WWE full time, setting up cameras around the ring and above it, capturing every move and entrance in very high detail for every wrestler. This alone is a mammoth task as you can imagine. Also at various times they take each wrestler to studios all over the world to create the voice overs. Every year they track which play modes are popular and which are not – this then determines how modes are included in the next release. They also take feedback from the fans very seriously, so like this year King Of The Ring was requested and included purely due to the fans demands. That says a lot in my book as it’s the fans that matter, and THQ and Yuke’s listen to them. As for next year and whether this is a far as the franchise can be pushed on the Xbox 360, they again said that being able to disregard modes that are obsolete or not popular enables them to focus on what is important and being enjoyed the most by the fans of the game, allowing them to add new content and modes every year, keeping each release fresh and interesting, without simply pimping up an older release.
So then to finish off the night Jason a guy from another publication and myself decided to recreate the “Hell in a Cell” match between
Undertaker and Mankind. The main thing we wanted to do was throw Mankind off the top of the cage down onto the commentators table. I took up the persona of Mankind while Jason played as the Undertaker. We entered the cage, sweaty palmed and eager to kick seven bells out of each other. Fifteen minutes went by and neither of us could get the upper hand, but then Undertaker threw Mankind over the top rope. He was hurt and struggling to get up, then here comes Undertaker picking up Mankind slamming him repeatedly into the cage wall, finally breaking it. Undertaker climbs the cage as Mankind struggles to get up, “GET UP, GET UP” I shout. He’s up and I follow to the cage roof, we again go at it kicking, punching and reversing each others moves. But then Undertaker pile drives Mankind into the cage roof breaking it, Mankind slams into the canvas below, wriggling and holding his back. Undertaker beacons him back up to the roof and he obliges, again slamming each other onto the cage, but no Undertaker scores a massive forearm, Mankind is hurting. Undertaker picks him up goes to the edge of the cage and throws him off, smashing the commentators table in half and it’s the end for Mankind. For the record Jason, I want a rematch!!
WWE 13 is jam packed with Attitude, as it is set to not only be the biggest sporting release this year but of the last few years. THQ and Yuke’s have managed to put enough content into WWE 13 for 2 or 3 releases. It is packed tighter with more features and modes than a can of sardines. Set for release on November the second, we cannot wait to play more of it.
P.S We will be doing another article showing you guys some pictures and telling you about how we ended up travelling home in a taxi with CM Punk, Stone Cold, Sheamus and a very dubious taxi driver who did not want three 6ft wrestlers in his cab on our blog tomorrow.
