Alien Spidy Interview
We got the chance lately to put a few questions to the developers of Alien Spidy and find out some more about this intriguing platform title. Alien Spidy is under development by Enigma Software and due to be published by Kalypso Media for XBLA, PSN and Steam. One thing that stands out for us is the originality they have used in creating the main character, which is an Alien Spidy. So firstly let me refresh you on what the game is all about.
The Story,
After losing contact with his explorer friend Virgi, our fearless alien hero Spidy heads to Earth in his spacecraft to find her in Alien Spidy. While entering the Earth’s atmosphere, his spacecraft suddenly fails and starts to break up, causing Spidy to crash-land on the strange planet, with his craft scattered across forests, throughout ponds and into dark caves. Spidy finds himself alone on an alien world and faces the epic challenge of tracking down Virgi, battling strange new enemies and finding the missing pieces from his spacecraft in order to repair the damage and make their escape home. The stage is set for the adventure of a lifetime as Spidy embarks on a perilous journey through a visually stunning 2D/3D world, where quick reflexes and fast-paced platform action create a fun and rewarding gameplay experience, which is easy to pick up, but challenging to master.
The Character,
So we asked a few questions about the main character. Looking at him they have managed to give a life of his own. He looks a very endearing character that you just cannot help but love and warm too quickly.
What is the story behind the main character in the game ?
During an exploratory mission to earth, Spidy’s best friend, Virgi loses contact with their home planet. Worried about her safety, Spidy decides to fly to earth to try to rescue her but during his journey he encounters a problem with his spaceship and as he enters the earth’s atmosphere he crash lands. Spidy must now find Virgi and recover the pieces of his spaceship before he can fly back to their home planet.
Does the character have a name yet ?
The lead character is called Spidy, because it is a Spider.
What are the characters main attributes ?
Spidy is best known for his acrobatic moves enabled by the use of his web string and also for his natural speed and grace.
Alien Spidy looks great but what sort of challenges and enemies are we to expect?
Throughout each level Spidy must overcome earth’s insects and alien enemies that he encounters in each level. The challenges will need to be solved extremely fast and Spidy will need to dash across the ground and swing through the air with his web to collect orbs of energy, power-ups and other fascinating in game items, whilst avoiding a multitude of enemies, such as bats, hedgehogs, mosquitoes and fish, just to name a few. In Alien Spidy you don´t kill enemies, you only avoid them or outsmart them, so no animal has been harmed during the production of the game!
From looking at Alien Spidy we would class it as an adventure/ platform title, what if anything will Alien Spidy offer that is different from other titles of the genre ?
Although Alien Spidy is easy to pick up and play it is tricky to master. As with most platform titles you will need to learn how to control the character and work out how to move, jump and run but with Alien Spidy you will also need to master the additional movement the web string brings to the game. Once the web string has been directed at a specific target, Spidy will be able to swing, move up and down, and jump from the string as well as a whole bunch of other actions which add different challenges throughout the game and make the whole Alien Spidy experience more interesting.
The environments look very rich and well designed, where is the scene set for Alien Spidy ?
The game starts in the garden of a residential house, then moves to the forest, followed by the ponds and finally the colourful caves. Each setting has been created to provide a rich visual experience where 3D and 2D have been blended in a unique way.
Will we be seeing online or co-op play in the title ?
Not for this version, however we are evaluating the opportunities for DLC and even for Alien Spidy 2.
What in your opinion, is the most unique part of Alien Spidy as a game ?
Without a doubt the web string control gives a unique approach to controlling a game character.
When should we see it on XBLA ?
We don’t have a set date just yet, but we hope the game is set for release on XBLA during Christmas holiday period.
Then Enigma Software left us and you to ponder on their final comment, which may well be a little clue you decide, I for one am looking forward to the challenge of this original and challenging title.
Are Virgi and Spidy more then friends?
