Released on the 12th of October was Of Orcs And Men, developed by Cyanide Studios and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game is an RPG title that puts you in charge of a legendary Orc called Arkail and a sneaky Goblin called Styx. If you have ever played with Warhammer of like fantasy in general Orcs and Goblins will be well known factions to you. I have always liked the fantasy side of gaming and am hoping that this game will be the missing link, that I have been waiting for.
The Story,
Of Orcs and Men first puts you into the role of an elite Orc soldier from the legendary legion of Bloodjaws, a league of warriors deeply involved in the war opposing the Orcs and Goblins on one side to their persecutors, Humankind. As a veteran warrior who has seen the most brutal of battles, you are appointed by the Orc commander to complete a mission that could change the course of the war: kill the
one man responsible for all of this bloodshed, the one who has, for years, exhorted the human masses to loathe and fight the green-skinned people: the Emperor himself.
A Goblin will soon join you to aid you in your mission… he is everything the Orc is not. But you find that this works to your advantage as you fight on the battleground and off. Making advantage of their natural traits, they have their own skill trees you will develop. While the Orc focuses on power, reflecting his incredible strength, the Goblin will benefit from darker powers and stealth abilities, making him the perfect assassin.
From the filthy alleys at the foot of the Great Wall, to the depths of the Empire of Men, your two infiltrated heroes will face the greatest dangers through their epic quest. They will commune with the Wizards, fight the assassins and soldiers of the Empire of Men, and oppose the powerful Sisters of Laments.As the world falls into chaos and you face a cruel and merciless humanity bent on eternal persecution of Orcs and Goblins, your unlikely duo will have one last chance to change the course of History and, hopefully, bringing peace between your peoples.
Gameplay and Graphics,
As you start your journey through Of Orcs And Men you quickly find out that it is essentially, a real time – turn based RPG. In which you stack up commands during battle to defeat your foes. Starting out with the giant, muscular Orc you will be soon joined by the nimble and rather foul mouthed Goblin. Now this is where things get interesting as you can switch between these two characters at will, and you will need to master them both if you are to succeed. Some of the battles in which you find yourself involved in cannot be won without the use of Styx’s stealth actions, using him to creep through a crowd slitting throats as he goes. Arkail has two stances he swaps between in combat, a Berserker one that focuses on heavy damage and a rage meter that fills every time he gets smacked around, and a more defensive stance that lets him soak up damage – it’s pretty vital to his survival, too, because despite his size he hits like a complete sissy at first and a few humans with spears can down him in seconds on the game’s normal difficulty mode unless you figure out how to switch between stances.
I have to say I really like the imagination and effort gone into the storyline in this game, it’s deep and drags you into the struggle and plight of the main characters. The world in which it has been set is well designed and aids you in getting a feel for the time you are in. Of Orcs and Men has also some very solid audio, with the voice acting being exceeding good (as Mr Kipling Would say). You get no dodgy accents or cheesy porn sounding crap, and combine that with the music and they really have hit the button on the audio side for me.The music in the game was performed by The Boston Cello Quartet, you can get the full soundtrack HERE. Delivering a rather good twist at the end, that you won’t see coming Of Orcs And Men is about 20 hours or so long.
Conclusion,
With so many big titles hitting our shelves this year it would be so easy to pass by a title that has not had millions of pounds thrown at the advertising. And that would be a loss, as Of Orcs and Men gives you a unique and engrossing experience. Although not without it’s faults the game is enjoyable and pleasurable to play. So if you want an escape from your ordinary life into a fantasy world filled with Orcs and Goblins, get Of Orcs And Men it will not disappoint.
